Nordstrom Music Windows
As part of the Emerging Media team at Nordstrom, I worked on two interactive, street-facing window displays for the flagship store. These installations, created in collaboration with two different partners, explored the sights, sounds, and fashion of Seattle's music scene.
Partnering with the Museum of Pop Culture (formerly The Experience Music Project), we created an experience using rear-projection transparent touch film. Shoppers could interact directly through the window to select a band, triggering music on outdoor speakers and activating a spotlight inside the display to highlight associated memorabilia.
In collaboration with Sub Pop Records, I used the same stack to build a similar interface and overall design, but added a second networked projection system that played high-definition video on the back wall of the display.

The Visual Merchandising team was tasked with creating a multimedia experience in a high-traffic exterior window at the corner of the flagship store. They engaged our team to explore interactive possibilities. My colleague proposed using new transparent touch film technology that could enable touch interaction directly through the glass. Once the theme and designs were established, I was asked to lead the technical development for the experience.
After planning the tech stack and validating its ability to meet the requirements, I performed the following tasks:
- Designed system architecture
- Built the UI and programmed the view and controller applications (Flash/ActionScript)
- Integrated touch input, WebSocket communications, audio playback, and DMX lighting control
- Helped curate and process images, audio and video content
- Conducted testing, troubleshooting, and field validation
- Captured observational learning for future projects
The first installation received strong positive feedback from Nordstrom leadership and generated significant internal visibility for our team. This success led directly to a second window project and helped establish a broader appetite for retail interactive experiences, creating opportunities for additional in-store marketing innovations.
